Summer 2: 'Children's Choice!'

This half term is all about following the children's interests with our learning themes. They have told me they want to learn more about dinosaurs (although this will be brief as it is a Year One topic), space/rockets, transport, how our body works... to name a few! At the beginning of term we will walk to our local library and identify familiar local landmarks along the way. Our focus Talk 4 Writing text is going to be Supertato, which links well with national 'Healthy Eating week'. The children will enjoy creating their own Supertato characters, designing an evil vegetable villain and creating their own stories linked to this. In maths, we are looking at doubling, even and odd, grouping/sharing and consolidating all of our previous learning this year. We will also take part in rehearsing and performing for our whole school production 'Pirates vs Mermaids' as well as taking part in Sports Day. Finally, as we get nearer the end of term we will prepare the children for their transition into Year One.

Please check out the key learning overview document below to see a summary of our learning this half term.

Summer 1: 'Disney Around the World'

Our topic this half term is using different Disney films (old and new) to link to different parts of the world. We will explore different languages, cultures, dances, songs, music, food, compare the weather and locations... It is going to be so much fun! Alongside this, we will be covering 'To 20 and beyond!' for our White Rose maths topic and progressing further through the RWI phonics scheme. At the end of the half term we will have fun preparing for the Queen's Jubilee celebrations. Of course, every day we will continue to challenge ourselves learning through play and building upon our friendships and problem solving skills - 'Relationships' is our Jigsaw PSHE topic this half term. Check out our key learning overview document below for a more detailed summary of this half term's learning.

This half term we will look at the wonderful world of farm life, exploring different animals which live in the UK and their habitats. We will also have an exciting 1st week back with a belated 'Fab Finish' for our 'Once upon a Time' topic (silly wind cancelling school!) and World Book Day fun! In Jigsaw, our PSHE circle time programme, we will be discussing ways to keep ourselves healthy and will benefit from a visit from the AFCB Education team linked to this. In maths, we will be continuing to deepen our understanding of numbers up to 10 and also investigating 3D shapes in fun ways such as printing. During our Talk 4 Writing literacy sessions we will enjoy learning the text Owl Babies through actions and drama; eventually we will begin to create our own versions of this popular story. Our topic will finish with an exciting trip to a local farm, Longdown Dairy Farm and we will also be walking to visit St Mary's Church in West Moors in the lead up to Easter celebrations. Alongside both of these focus texts, we will reading many other traditional tales and perhaps even some alternative versions. Our maths topic this half term is called 'Alive in 5!' where we explore the number 0 and begin looking at how 6,7 and 8 are made using smaller numbers. Following the children's interests in their storytelling time, we will be looking at castles and this will become part of our role play area. We will be challenging the children to make crowns, shields and swords out of various materials. In circle time, our Jigsaw PSHE focus is 'dreams and goals'. This half term also includes Valentines Day, Chinese New Year, Number Day and The Big Bird Watch for RSPB.
