At Oakhurst, we strive to develop a lifelong love of reading as well as reading for a purpose. We provide daily story and poetry time that excites and transports children into an imaginary world. The children are exposed to rich vocabulary and develop their story telling skills. Each story is carefully selected to provide a wide range of genres, contexts and language.  

The children learn to read using a systematic phonics scheme called Read Write Inc as early as Nursery. Once fluent in decoding, they move onto the Read Write Inc Comprehension scheme where they deepen their understanding of a story by unpicking the plot, characters and settings. The children will make predictions, infer, sequence and retrieve information from a text. This continues in Key Stage 2 with a core text selected for each half term.
