Learning in Nursery
The children in Nursery follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. This is divided into the following areas;
The Prime areas (these are fundamental and support development in all of the other areas):
Communication and Language
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
The Specific Areas (these include the knowledge and skills that are necessary building blocks for later learning):
Understanding the World
Expressive Arts and Design
These areas are explored through careful planning around the children’s interests and needs. Activities include play indoors and outdoors, sessions in the school grounds and hall, differentiated group times and carpet times. There sessions can vary with the children learning in small groups, one to one with an adult or all joining in together, for example singing time. The children are given the time to explore, to choose their own learning, and to develop independence through a range of exciting activities that are topic based. Topics can last 1 to 3 weeks depending on the children’s level of interest. There is a huge focus on play based learning so that the children can develop the skills to become life long learners. The classroom environment is carefully planned to be stimulating and enriching so that the children can use it independently and so that there are many opportunities for them to take their learning further.
There is a big emphasis on getting children ‘school ready’ so that they are equipped with all of the skills that they need for starting school.
